Guest Post - Deep Water Within: Behind the Story by Author Sandra Lott

Deep Waters Within is about the internal struggle a young man had concerning his faith.  He was close to his father but they had differences regarding their beliefs and those differences came to a head.

The character in the story, Jim Staley, was adamant that he was right and his dad was wrong.  He couldn’t accept it and moved completely across the county!  He moved from Chatham Massachusetts. To Half Moon Bay California.

Sound familiar?  This is sort of a modern-day take on Jonah from the Bible.  Jonah did the same thing and ran into trouble and eventually had to come to terms with the Lord.

Jim made a new life for himself in California and kept ignoring his heart and his conscience tugging at him to call home.  He made new friends and even a love interest, but that didn’t stop his conscience and the bad dreams that kept erupting from ignoring those tugs.

He should have called home, because while he was away his dad developed cancer.  Eventually the dreams took their toll on Jim and his girlfriend and they separated.  This made him look at himself and he finally called home, only to discover the news!  His dad was dying!

The thing I want to convey to everyone in this story, is do not be so adamant that you are right!  Don’t be so headstrong and rigid in your thinking, you just might have the wrong perspective on your beliefs.  Jim wasted so much time because of the rigidity.  How much time do we waste and how many regrets do we leave ourselves in being so close minded and prideful that we think we are always right and everyone else is always wrong.  Maybe just maybe, sometimes our beliefs and our perspectives are wrong.  When our perspectives are wrong, so will our actions and what we say. 

When relationships are involved, they are sometimes affected much like the character in my story.  Why do we want to always be right at the risk of losing out on those most precious to us.

I lost my sixteen-year-old son and I have many regrets and the “I wish I had done’s.” I do not want to live that way anymore.  Is being right all the time worth it?

Today with so many people at odds with their beliefs I feel this book is necessary to help people think about what is really important.  It isn’t being right, it is, “Love one another as I have loved you.” (John 13:34)

The Lord did not say to judge and to be right all the time, He said to love one another and to, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:3-4)

I try to live that way and while I have my beliefs, I care not what other people’s beliefs are and how they may differ from mine.  I will share if I am asked but God tells me to love and I try to live that way.  I have others in my family that do not believe the way I do, but I love them with all of my heart.

If mankind would love one another, and not judge and think about others before themself, it would be a better place and we would be true, “Ambassadors of Christ,” and we would not be giving the Lord and the Bible the bad name it has today in the eyes of many.

It is not our place to judge and I do not want that job!  God tells us to love, to love and not hate, to forgive and to bless.

What a difference the world would be if we would humble ourselves and ask, just for a minute, “Is my perspective wrong?”

Why lose out on relationships and precious moments at the risk of being right?  And even if you are right, you do not have to “beat someone over the head,” so to speak with your beliefs.  Just love them as the Lord tells you to do, and pray to the Lord.  Pray for the Lord to show you if you are wrong and to show the other person if they are wrong.

We need to open our hearts and our minds and let the Lord’s will be done.  “Love one another.”

New Book Takes Children on the Adventure of a Lifetime with Leonardo DaVinci

Leonardo and the Time Travelers is the product of a unique collaboration of five women from around the world who joined together to create a children’s book about learning and time travel during the pandemic.

 

In 2020, two grandmothers across the pond from each other decided to do something positive during the lockdown: to write a book inspired by their grandchildren. Marian Lye and Patty McGuigan share a set of lively grandkids, who were to be the heroes of a Silicon Valley adventure. But they needed an illustrator. Rebekah Reif, just turning 21 and graduating, joined the creative team. Next was Maria Mayer Feng, an incredible creative director in New York and then Kate Ryan, an editor who lives in Hawaii and understood the writers’ vision.  The Circle of Five was established: women of all different ages, from Hawaii to England coming together to create Leonardo and the Time Travelers.

 

“The pandemic has brought many changes to our world. We were determined to produce something positive out of this time,” says author Patty McGuigan. “The five of us put our creativity to work and created this fun and inspiring story.”

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Patty McGuigan is the proud grandmother of four grandchildren. She is also a successful commercial real estate agent, a past high school English teacher, and active in her San Francisco Bay Area community. Patty has created numerous books of her artwork and travel memories. Her creativity has been her defining factor throughout her life, and indeed she does believe in time travel.

 

Marian Lye lives in Weymouth, England. She and her husband raised three boys, and she worked in administration for a government department for many years. Her love of history led her to write Weymouth at War, an account of World War 2 on the south coast of England. The book, now in its second edition, features the dramatic build up to D-Day in June 1944, when thousands of American servicemen set sail from the twin ports of Weymouth and Portland, bound for “Omaha Beach” in Normandy. In this millennium, the arrivals of three lively grandkids in California have been magical milestones.

 

Rebekah Reif is based in New Hampshire, where she recently graduated from the School of Art and Design at New England College. An up-and-coming artist, she has a natural talent for drawing, and amazed her collaborators on this project with every new scene she sketched out. My Thoughts

Her Virtue is a Phantom of the Opera retelling with a very unique twist. In this story, Christine has been defiled and suffers a horrible loss. When all seems lost, Erik whisks her away to safety. He'll do whatever it takes to keep her safe, even if it means having to kill. Together they learn to care for each other and heal each other, both physically and emotionally. 

This phantom of the opera tale offers an erotic twist on the original the with lots of steamy scenes between Christine and the Erik. I also love the painstaking detail with which the author describes the phantom's deformity. It really brings the character to life on the page. Phans everywhere are sure to love this addition to phantom lore. 

Heart of a Thespian by Emma Kathryn

Abandoned in a strange town, orphan Tessa has nothing but her stunning looks to help her survive. She catches the eye of two very different men. Tony, star of the music hall stage, hideously deformed but somehow seductive, wants her to perform alongside him. Rich and handsome Riley, on the other hand, offers her a peaceful life with the gentry.

Tessa's choice leads to a scandalous career as a magician's assistant. But before too long, she realizes there is a sinister force behind the scenes. My Thoughts

In Heart of a Thespian, a young girl named Tessa finds herself alone in a seashore town.  At her lowest moment, a magician named Tony helps her find her way in a new town. Despite the scandal of being involved with a theatre person, Tess finds herself drawn to the handsome older man who always wears a mask. Then, another man named Riley stumbles upon Tess. Rich and handsome, he tries to woo her away from Tony. She's torn in two directions, and to add to the suspense, she finds herself in the midst of a mysterious theft. While Tessa's heart leans toward Tony, she worries about what people will think of her if she chooses a life on the stage. Will Tessa choose Tony or Riley? Will she get drawn in a crime? You'll have to read the book yourself to find out.

I thoroughly enjoyed this historical novel. As a fan of the Phantom of the Opera, its impossible not to draw a parallel between Tony and Erik, but make no mistake, this is not a retelling. This is a unique story line with a heroine who doesn't hide behind her skirts and a hero with debonair charm. I loved the tenderness Tessa shows Tony in regards to his deformity, but I also enjoyed the passion. Overall, this was a fantastic novel that provides a tender love story with a few steamy moments, and an accurate view of life on the stage in the Victorian era.

Casi continues seeing visions of Luke Padmore as he continues his rampage, but she’s convinced it’s because of her own trauma and survivor’s guilt, and they slowly fade away. In their wake, Casi turns her attention to those she can help.

During this quiet lull, Luke Padmore once again appears, cutting a path through all those that get in his way as he heads for Raegar’s Mill and Casi.

My Thoughts

Luke Padmore is causing mayhem again in this horrific third installment of The Slasher Experience.  In this installation, Casi is about to be released from the hospital, but she's plagued by dreams of Luke coming after her. Her powers tell her this is more than just a dream, and the spirit of her murdered friend backs up her instincts. Her brother Tom is also struggling, but finds strength in the arms of his older lover, vixen attorney Laura.  The siblings hope to reconnect with their friend Zach and end the murderous rampage once and for all.

This was an awesome closing to a great horror trilogy. As with the first two books, there are many unique death scenes that will bring to mind some of the greatest slasher films of the 80s. There were even a few scenes that got me emotional because I've gotten rather attached to some of these characters.  The ending brought with it a shocking reveal I wasn't expecting. Despite all the carnage, it is a satisfying ending with a possibility of more to come in the future.

My Thoughts

Losing Me brings us to Courtney's final battle. With her enemies targeting her and her son, she's ready to do whatever it takes to keep her child safe. With the help of her husband and her twin, she prepares to fight the dark ones. Will she survive or will be finally meet the same fate as her birth mother? You'll have to read it to find out.

Losing Me is the final installment in the Lightworker series and it won't disappoint. However, it may rip your heart out. No spoilers here, but have the tissues handy! Be prepared for shocking twists and turns.  I have grown very attached to Courtney and the gang, and I'm kind of sad to see the series come to an end, but it was definitely a satisfying finale. If you haven't read the series yet, be sure to read them in order to follow Courtney through her many years of love, loss, and butt kicking.

After meeting the magical animals for tea, the children fly on the backs of the ‘Great Wise Owls’, soaring high towards the Tower of London. A truly marvellous party hosted by the Tower’s world famous ravens takes place with all the Tower of London’s historical animals, dancing and singing. With only a limited amount of time to get back to their picnic spot, Henry and Kathleen are against time to find hidden clues throughout the Tower of London’s narrow passages, dodging laser beams, hidden tiny rooms and with many twists and turns. Henry and Kathleen’s aim is to find the Crown Jewels before it’s too late! Getting chased out of the Tower by the Queen’s medieval metal armoured Guards and setting off alarm bells, Henry and Kathleen finally get saved!
