Heart of a Thespian by Emma Kathryn

Abandoned in a strange town, orphan Tessa has nothing but her stunning looks to help her survive. She catches the eye of two very different men. Tony, star of the music hall stage, hideously deformed but somehow seductive, wants her to perform alongside him. Rich and handsome Riley, on the other hand, offers her a peaceful life with the gentry.
Tessa's choice leads to a scandalous career as a magician's assistant. But before too long, she realizes there is a sinister force behind the scenes. Something which could see her glorious new life ending in a bloody and gruesome final act. Which man is prepared to save her? As her fate hangs in the balance, Tessa will at last learn the meaning of love.

My Thoughts

In Heart of a Thespian, a young girl named Tessa finds herself alone in a seashore town.  At her lowest moment, a magician named Tony helps her find her way in a new town. Despite the scandal of being involved with a theatre person, Tess finds herself drawn to the handsome older man who always wears a mask. Then, another man named Riley stumbles upon Tess. Rich and handsome, he tries to woo her away from Tony. She's torn in two directions, and to add to the suspense, she finds herself in the midst of a mysterious theft. While Tessa's heart leans toward Tony, she worries about what people will think of her if she chooses a life on the stage. Will Tessa choose Tony or Riley? Will she get drawn in a crime? You'll have to read the book yourself to find out.

I thoroughly enjoyed this historical novel. As a fan of the Phantom of the Opera, its impossible not to draw a parallel between Tony and Erik, but make no mistake, this is not a retelling. This is a unique story line with a heroine who doesn't hide behind her skirts and a hero with debonair charm. I loved the tenderness Tessa shows Tony in regards to his deformity, but I also enjoyed the passion. Overall, this was a fantastic novel that provides a tender love story with a few steamy moments, and an accurate view of life on the stage in the Victorian era.

Toll the Bell: A Titanic Adventure by CP Bialois

Thomas Clayton is an assassin hired to kill his best friend. He can’t help but wonder if this is the one task he won’t be able to complete. Who could his friend have crossed this time anyway?

Born into wealth, Thomas spends most of his waking moments antagonizing those of his class, until a beautiful socialite crosses his path. She proves to be as much an enigma as himself. Their meeting seems innocent enough, but when he’s forced into service to kill his current target, dark and sinister complications arise.

He struggles to reclaim control over the situation. He needs to determine why his friend is in so deep while saving his own skin, all before the Titanic reaches New York.

My Thoughts

In Toll the Bell, Thomas Clayton is a hit man with a dark past given the impossible mission of killing his only friend. He's already struggling with the task, and things only get more complicated when he meets a woman. While he finds her tantalizing, there's also something suspicious about her. Unsure who he can trust, Clayton must unravel multiple mysteries before the ship reaches the port.

Toll the Bell is a amazing story that merges history and an exciting mystery. The elements of the crime are multi-layered and weave a tale of intrigue. The historical elements are well researched and will make you feel as if you are walking along the deck of the long lost ship. This is a story that crosses many genres and will please fans who enjoy historical novels, romances, and mysteries.

Book Spotlight & #Giveaway - Scandalous Endeavors by Amanda Marie

Genre: Historical Romance
Lady Amelia has only known the comfort of life in mid-eighteenth century English aristocracy. But when first her mother and then her father die, she finds herself alone, grief stricken and….. not of age. Her appointed guardian, an American uncle, has ordered her travel to his plantation where she must remain for at least two years when she will come of age.
With the help of Lady Grace and Lady Sarah, Lady Amelia gets her uncle to agree to give her four weeks to settle her affairs and unbeknownst to him…find an English lord to marry so she can remain in her beloved England. Despite her mourning period she endeavors to trap one of London’s eligible bachelors in matrimony.
Lord Goldstone, Lady Grace’s nephew is devilishly handsome, but a Scottish Duke and so entirely unacceptable as a possible husband. After all Scotland is not her beloved London and environs. He also has a nasty habit of showing up at all the wrong moments and thwarting her carefully laid plans to ensnare a suitable husband. Sparks fly as the pair find themselves at odds with each other and drawn to each other at the same time. Can they find a way to stop arguing long enough to explore their growing passion? Is it strong enough to make Lady Amelia give up her English home after all? Or will Lady Amelia find a suitable English lord and avoid social exile in America? Time is running out.
SORM excerpt

Lord Roseington wrapped his arms around her and stood up, setting her on her feet. “Yes, Amelia, everything is okay now.” He reached up and removed her arms from around him, then took a step back. “We must stop winding up in these situations before we cause a scandal.”
She looked at him through hooded eyes. “‘Tis a wonder we haven’t already.”
A man cleared his voice behind her.
Amelia turned her head, already knowing who had caught them. “Lord Goldstone, you mustn’t trouble yourself with keeping our secret.”
“What she means to say is that there is no secret to be kept. Amelia carelessly got close enough to the hearth to catch her skirts ablaze. I could not very well let her burn up.”
“No, Roseington, you were obliged to help. I am glad to know that you were not taking advantage of our dear Amelia.” He glanced at her and flashed a rakish smirk. “Indeed, you are a hero. Let us go share the story while Amelia changes her charred gown.”
She tried her hardest to shoot daggers at him from her narrowed glare. His grin only deepened at the attempt, which increased her ire. “Don’t you dare tell a soul. I would most definitely perish from the embarrassment!” Amelia spat the words out with anger and annoyance. How dare he ruin everything for a second time, and then jest about sharing her humiliation. If he were not Scottish, she would trap him instead. That would teach him a lesson.
“Do not worry your head over it, Lady Amelia. We will not breathe a word of this little mishap,” Lord Roseington said. “Right, Goldstone?”
“Of course not. All of your secrets are safe with me.” He winked.
Amelia blushed at what he had implied. “Thank you. Now that it is settled I am going to retire for the evening. Enjoy the rest of the party. Lord Roseington, Lord Goldstone.” She inclined her head to them before spinning on her heels and speeding from the room.

Book Spotligt & #Giveaway - An Irresistible Shadow by Kirsten S. Blacketer

Genre: Historical Romance
Lady Evelyn Montgomery, only daughter of the Baron of Rayne, detests the thought of marriage. She will never allow a man to control her. Crushed by the constraints of propriety, she steals away from the safety of the keep and stumbles onto a plot designed to stir up trouble between England and Scotland. When a mysterious hooded man saves her, she fights her attraction to him as they join forces to hunt down a traitor and save her father. But can she save her heart?
Gabriel is a Shadow Guardian. Hiding beneath his black cowl and blending into the night, he is sworn to protect the Baron’s daughter. The spirited Lady Evelyn is far from the delicate flower he anticipated. She makes herself crystal clear, no man will possess her. Can he prove to her that love can be more than just possession? Or will the traitor they seek tear them apart forever?

SORM excerpt Fear infused her body, Evelyn had been captured. The fear melted into anger. She thrashed in her captor’s arms, twisting and kicking. His gloved hand tightened over her mouth and the other pinned her securely against his chest.
“I mean you no harm,” a velvet voice whispered in her ear. “I don’t want to bind you, but I will.” Evelyn’s heel connected with the man’s shin. He cursed. “Although you evidently mean to harm me.” His voice was calm, suffused with amusement. He carried her to where their horses were tethered.
Evelyn struggled to free herself, but he was much stronger. She was close enough to the keep to call for help, if he would only remove his hand from her mouth. He was all warm muscle against her back, a living, breathing stone wall. His breath caressed the fine hairs on her neck. When he stopped moving, she wedged her mouth open enough to fit her teeth around one of his fingers and bit down. Hard.
“God’s blood, woman! I’m trying to help you,” he swore in his velvet whisper, then readjusted his hand over her mouth.
So much for that idea. If she had to play along with the rogue, so be it. He held no weapon to her throat. Though his hold on her was firm, he did not cause her pain. His muscles flexed as he shifted her in his grasp. She was keenly aware of every part of him that touched her. Okay, so he had a weapon against her. Though she had yet to see his face, her body betrayed her with its reaction. Evelyn inhaled in an effort to regain her composure and breathed in his scent. It was fresh, earthy, and dangerously sinful. She groaned, embarrassed by her wicked thoughts.
Her captor stilled, his breath quickening. “I will let you go,” he murmured. “If you promise to behave.” She nodded, relieved when he kept his word.
Evelyn broke from his embrace and spun on him. “Who are you?” she hissed. “What do you want?” She scrutinized the shadowed man before her. He wore all black: boots, leggings, tunic, and cloak. The hood covering his head was positioned low purposefully to hide his face from scrutiny.
The man proffered a sardonic bow, waving his arm with a flourish. “I am your humble servant, my lady.”
The humor in his voice made her wary of his intent. “How did you know I was here?”
“I followed you,” he answered.
She swallowed the lump in her throat. Following her? The words of Sir Alexander echoed in her mind. She should have taken a guard. “Why did you not make your presence known?”
“That would not have served my purpose, my lady,” he replied as he leaned against a tree, melding into the shadows. Since he seemed more amused than disturbed by her questions, she asked another.
“Why did you grab me?” she demanded, licking her dry lips. Formidable and mysterious, this man of the shadows aroused her curiosity.
“Ensuring your safety. You’re not as quiet as you think you are.”
Evelyn bristled. She was proud, unwilling to admit he was right. “Who do you think you are?” Her voice rose in pitch and fervor. “First, you follow me, then accost me, and finally insult me. You, sir, are playing a dangerous game. I should turn you over to the night watch.” She poked him in the chest. “I don’t need your help. I can take care of myself.” Evelyn turned looking for her horse.
“I can see that.”

Balen’s words became no more than whispers as the herbs in the tea started to do their job. Before long, he fell into a fitful sleep, still tossing and calling out to Galiene even in his dreams. But it was Eartha who clutched his hand and lovingly smoothed the hair from his eyes until at last he settled into a sounder slumber.
“I will not let you die, Balen,” she whispered, though she knew he could no longer hear her. “Nor will I allow you to lose that which you hold most dear.”
Eartha stood from the straw bed and stared into the fire. Suddenly her cheeks were blazing, but it had little to do with the warmth of the flames. Short Story Review: Shore's Edge by Tara S. Wood

The wheel of the year turns, bringing the joy of spring, the warmth of summer, the richness of autumn, and the merriment of winter. But eight Celtic festivals link these seasons together, bringing with them romance, lust, danger, and even magic. From a city under threat from night-time creatures at Ostara, to a selkie caught by the light of the Lughnasadh moon, to a writer caught in the flames of a fiery goddess at Imbolc.

Eight authors have come together to give their own twist on these festivals, weaving each story with a blend of myth, magic, and contemporary telling…to create A Celtic Tapestry.

My Thoughts

Saoirse is the daughter of a clan leader, and she's furious when her father wants to trade her innocence for a peace treaty with their enemy. Refusing to accept a marriage with a man she hates, she runs away, only to come face to face with a selkie named Ronan. It turns out the same man who wants to marry Saorise, has been kidnapping the female selkies, including Ronan's sister  While the selkie warns her that he must eventually return to the sea, the two form a pact to stop the evil clan leader and find a little romance along the way.

Shore's Edge is a beautifully written historical fantasy lush with vivid scenes and endearing characters. There are intense battle scenes and lovemaking that will leave you sweating, all mixed with the magical elements of the mythical selkie. I thoroughly enjoyed this short story. It's a quick read that merges several of my favorite genres and I will definitely be looking for more works from this author in the future.

Book Spotlight - The Viscount's Prize by Patricia Bates

Genre: Historical Romance

The rogue spy and his sheltered courtesan must fight to find a far more ephemeral reward than mere passion – they must try to survive falling in love in a time when love isn’t fashionable.

Frederique’s gaze slid past the queen as he knelt. His heart lightened when he recognized one of the queen’s maidens. “Elisabeth.” The name slipped past his lips in a soundless whisper. Shock reverberated through his body as she drifted into court a few steps behind her majesty.

His attention wandered to the other women in the royal procession and his heart nearly stopped when he saw the last woman in line. Dressed in silver, her hair was swept up into a loose pile of curls atop her head. Powdered to perfection, it had a pale glow to it. Her clear, stunning blue eyes swept the room with curiosity and a touch of anger. Artfully applied cosmetics highlighted her high cheekbones and small nose. Her red lips were tilted in a smile that did not reach her eyes. A small black mole decorated her upper lip in the fashion of the times. A fan hung from her hand, and the ruffles along the edges of her skirts fluttered like butterfly wings with each step. Her breasts seemed near to bursting out of the lace of her bodice. Ribbons and bows cascaded over the gown in simple splendor compared to the queen’s lavish bejeweled gown.

His body tightened as she bowed before the king and her full breasts pushed against the confines of her bodice. The king’s expression bore no hint of lust. Indeed, the king barely acknowledged her before turning to assist his wife into her seat. With the queen settled next to him, he motioned to the fair haired beauty standing a few steps beyond the dais.

Tara is addicted to Law & Order: SVU, has a crush on Cary Grant, laughs at her own jokes, and is constantly modifying recipes and experimenting in the kitchen. Her theme is Strong is Sexy. She writes about strong women facing obstacles—in the military, with their handicaps, or just learning to accept themselves. Her heroines can stand alone and take care of themselves, but they often find love in the process.

My Thoughts

Derby Dames is the sequel to Ride for Rights. This book finds Angeline, one of the sisters who rode motor bikes cross county, looking for one last thrill before motherhood. She joins the women's Air Derby along with historical figures like Amelia Eearhart and Marvell Crossen.  Even the fictional characters are based on real women who were part of the derby, which you can learn more about in the author's notes at the end.  The story follows closely with the real events of the derby, though elaborated for the sake of making the story more interesting. You follow each aviatrix as they experience excitement, fear, and sabotage. I loved all the characters in this story. Angeline has the same charm and spunk that she did in Ride for Rights, but there were some new women whose personalities were fun and colorful. I loved the cigar smoking Penelope and how she threw oranges at her husband's church, but each of the characters were well developed and all were based on real women even though their names were changed. You'll feel like you're riding beside the flyers as they race through the air, overcoming wing-eating cows, dog fights in the sky, and the constant challenge to prove their equality to men. Derby Dames is a wonderful historical novel with an original feminist voice and a unique storyline.

My Thoughts

Inspired by real suffragettes, Ride For Rights is the amazing story of two sisters who rode their motorbikes cross country to prove woman should have the right to vote and could assist in the war as dispatch riders. I loved the spunky personalities of the sisters and the way they stood up to adversity wherever they went, but it was the historical value of this story that really had me enthralled. Along their trip, the girls meets fictionalized versions of many historical figures. Angeline's diary entries also include tidbits of information of other events happening across the globe at that time. To keep things fun, there are a few comical mishaps like when they get arrested for being dressed as men. My favorite part is what happened when they were abducted in Utah, but you'll have to read it to find out what happens there. A great addition to the novel itself is the author's note at the end. It goes through the events in the book, separating fact from fiction. It gives you a little background info on the real Van Buren sisters who inspired the story. There is also a forward written by one of their descendents. I would ever have learned of these amazing women who fought for women's lib so many years ago if it wasn't for this entertaining read and I'm very grateful that this author has kept their memory alive in her work. Even though parts of the tale were enhanced for entertainment's sake, the fighting spirit of the women remains true. This book a wonderful inspiration to women everywhere.

 About this autho
r

I am an avid reader and addicted writer. I write non fiction about Goddess spirituality and fiction about 12th century witches as real women or about historical women who rose above the allowed possibilities.

I start things like a domestic violence intervention program, a sexual assault victims response program and a pagan church. Then I train people to run them so I can go on to the next thing.

I am the mother of too many cats, well qualified to be a crazy cat lady except it is my partner Eric that is responsible for all these furry creatures. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it.)

My Thoughts

Cawing Crows and Baying Hounds is a brilliantly depicted historical novella set in 12th century England. When Elspet's lover is attacked, she finds the spirit of the Morrigan has overtaken her and gives her the strength to help save his life. Later, as the two lay in bed, again the Morrigan visits them, this time accompanied by her immortal lover Chu Chulain.  This delightful short story has a lot of action and some pretty spicy scenes packed into only a few short pages. It also offered a new take on the Morrigan, one of my favorite deities. If you enjoy historical shorts or a good paranormal romance, Cawing Crows and Baying Hounds would make a wonderful edition to your library.
